“I never planned for a bigger age gap…” “I “I never planned for a bigger age gap…” “It’s like starting all over again…” “What if they don’t mesh well?” “What if they don’t share things in common because the age difference?” “What if my oldest child has a hard time adjusting?” “What if it’s too late?” “How are we going to adjust after getting into our groove as a family of (#)?” These were just a few of the questions & thoughts that ran through my head before welcoming our second son to the world. Well, really they started flooding my mind after my oldest turned 4 and my heart and spirit finally felt a “nudge” to try conceiving. And this doesn’t account for all the comments from strangers about the “big age gap” or other details that were, frankly, none of their business. We never planned for there to be 8 years between our kids. We also never planned to navigate aftermath of birth & postpartum trauma, followed by a very unexpected ‘secondary infertility’ journey. But we did. And here we are, and despite the sleep regression this last week, we couldn’t be more thankful for the relationship our sons have. Sometimes the age difference is more apparent, and Big Brother understands we have to cater more towards younger-activities. And other times, Little Brother just tags along and watches from the sidelines. Just like every age, every “gap” or age difference has its ebbs and flows. If you’re a Mama Friend feeling remotely similar to how I felt- whether you’re consciously trying to conceive or simply in the waiting season- I see you. Honestly, one of the best parts of this has been observing their dynamics and seeing their relationship grow. Seeing our oldest son meet his brother, help bring me snacks postpartum, offer to stock diapers and wipes (but not change them 🤣)…it has been so tender to see. Despite my concerns, the age gap didn’t make it harder; it made it even sweeter than I could have ever imagined. Really, this entire caption could be deduced to the point I’m trying to make: IT’S GOING TO BE OKAY 💛

Mom-life, am I right? 😝 For my Mama friends preparing to bring new life into the world soon, I wanted to share some favorite labor-snacks that provided me with easy energy (which labor requires a lot of energy). 🍯Honey Sticks (quick & easy energy) 🍎Organic applesauce pouches/cups (super convenient carbs) 🍇Cold grapes/fruit (I liked freezing grapes ahead of time and grabbing a few here and there). 🦴Broth- easy protein and something to sip that felt soothing 🍞Nut Butter/peanut butter on toast (during my first labor-a lovely 40+ hours- I nibbled on a piece of toast with peanut butter & banana slices. 8 years later, I wanted to have the same snack ready). 💧Hydrating elixir(s) to sip on (for example: I added mineral drops to water & made versions of “labor aid”. Several recipes can be found online; I share one in a previous post. As it turns out, I think I mention some of these on that same post and realized it after posting this one 🤣. I like have a variety of textures available because I’m not sure what I’ll be in the mood for. My first birth,when contractions began, I did all sorts of chores around the house, prepped baby things, started timing contractions WAY too early, etc. With this last labor, I focused on REST & NOURISHMENT. Sure, I fiddled about the house to pass time, but nothing like the first time! Until contractions were too noticeable, I slept. My sister helped me gather snacks. I mostly nibbled on soups, fruits, & plenty of hydrating beverages throughout the first day of early labor. When things progressed, I liked my space & only really sipped hydrating beverages. 💛.

Friendly reminder: Navigating the world of social media can be quite the experience. Our relationship with it can be just as toxic as others if we aren’t mindful of what we consume and how we consume it. No real intention behind this other than humoring myself and showing off these pretty highlighters I’ve become recently obsessed with. And this is not sponsored or affiliated in any way. I got them at Target even though I didn’t *need* them. 🤣 . . . @shopaltitudesupplies, I’m probably the biggest fan of your highlighters. They’re MY latest new favorite thing.
Based on my own experiences (with clogged ducts & Based on my own experiences (with clogged ducts & mastitis) and research, I wanted to share an acronym that I came up with this weekend. And by weekend, I mean this morning. So give me grace as I iron out the details of what I mean. 🤣 After several Mama friends reached out to me knowing my history of these fun occurrences, I’ve been trying to craft a way to simply break down what has helped me manage clogged ducts or mastitis. My go-tos if you will. Allow me to introduce you to what I’m calling My SIMPLE strategies: S- slowing down & prioritizing rest. I- inflammation reduction. M-minerals & hydration. P-pain relief as needed. L- lymphatic massage/movement *light* E-evaluation of potential factors (especially if reoccurring). I’m working on adding my experiences and what I find helpful to a “clogged ducts” highlight. I started sharing my SIMPLE strategies today but had to hop off to make dinner for my crew. I’ll be back to finish the highlight this week. So this post is a sneak peek at the remaining points ;) 🤪 Always keep in mind that the approach that is best is the one that works for YOU and your unique needs, tolerance, and condition. In 2022, the Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine rel In 2022, the Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine released new guidance about clogged ducts & mastitis. With recent research contributing these to factors such as hyper-lactation (oversupply) and dysbiosis (imbalance of naturally occurring bacteria). Essentially, inflammation inside the breast narrows milk ducts, which prevents milk from flowing. A key here is reducing inflammation 🔑. I feel it’s important to say that with breastfeeding issues, there’s no one-size-fits-all solution. With clogged ducts & types of mastitis, there’s more of a spectrum of progression. There are general strategies that help as a whole, and then for more progressed conditions, more specific interventions could be required. Context matters! It’s not always so black & white. Having said that, here I’m focused on general care considerations *I* have used with quick relief & success for clogged ducts & early stages of inflammatory mastitis. I have a highlight (titty trauma :P) where I share about a more significantly progressed situation of bacterial mastitis that I experiences. In that case, more interventions were very much warranted. Again, context matters. I’ve used variations of *this* approach several instances in a row with great success. I hope this helps you look into things further if this is something you are dealing with 💛. *this is my experience. Not medical advice* ➡️ *gentle breast lymphatic massage (& doing breast gymnastics throughout the day). Look up therapeutic breast massage online. ➡️cold application on the breast/clog between feeds/pumps using packs or ice roller ➡️nurse/pump in demand (not focused on “emptying the breast”) ➡️REST (easier said than done, I know. But this could mean saying “no” to anything that’s not priority for a few days and just lounging with my kids). ➡️ Hydration (like adding minerals into water, consuming hydrating foods, sticking to more whole foods) ➡️ ditch tight clothes/restrictive bras ➡️ immune support & modulation ➡️ supportive supplements, herbs, etc. as needed and/or as cleared by my providers 💛. I spent time making a healthy breakfast, only for him to dump the pasture-raised eggs and organic strawberries all over the floor after a single bite. 🙃.
