What To Do For Clogged Ducts

What To Do For Clogged Ducts

by Maddie | Feb 18, 2023 | breastfeeding, motherhood, postpartum, pumping

Let’s talk about clogged ducts- the bane of existence for many breastfeeding women. Whether you’re feeding your baby from the breast directly or you’re an exclusive pumper (or a combination of both!), a clogged duct is a possibility. REAL TALK: Clogged...

I’m Maddie Adeline-> Mother, women’s root-cause practitioner, holistic wellness enthusiast, and anxiety ass-kicker.

As a new Mama, it’s easy to become overstimulate As a new Mama, it’s easy to become overstimulated & overwhelmed, especially when there’s some sleep-deprivation involved. This is a time to really simplify things & cover a few basics in supporting your body and reduce stress.

➡️DON’T skip breakfast. consume nutrient-dense food/snacks throughout the day (things like Greek yogurt, eggs, avocado, trail mix, chicken salad, smoothie with protein powder & veggies/fruit, leftovers from dinner the night before, etc- depending on tolerance of course). Give your body the raw materials it needs to function as best as you can. Consume plenty of protein & healthy fats in ways that work for you.

☕️Save coffee until after getting something hearty in your stomach. As tempting as it may be, pounding coffee on an empty belly is like throwing a foot down on the gas peddle without any gas in the tank. Don’t rev up the cortisol up any more than it already is. For your coffee: skip processed & additive-filled conventional creamers and consider using things like pure maple syrup or honey to sweeten it, as well as some fats like ghee, Grass-fed butter, coconut cream, etc.

☀️Get outside! If you’re up early with baby, take advantage of it and catch some early morning sunlight for 15-20 minutes. I aim for outside time before 10:30 AM if weather permits. Light is a synchronizing agent for our brain & body. Among other benefits like boosting mood/health, AM sunlight helps reset circadian rhythm & can prime us for better sleep.

💦Hy-freakin-drate, Mama Friend. Doesn’t mean you have to pound plain water all day either. Get in a variety of foods/liquids to help you stay hydrated (watermelon, broth, etc). Electrolytes are minerals that carry an electromagnetic charge & are needed for many bodily processes, including hydration. Consider adding electrolytes into your routine. Adding a small pinch of sea salt to water may help increase water retention so you absorb it better. A few options for pre-made mixes include LMNT & Pickleball.

After the roller coaster that has been my breastfe After the roller coaster that has been my breastfeeding journey this season thus, I wanted to share a few thoughts. Before I do, note: there can be a variety of factors that made breastfeeding difficult. Period.
As I addressed physical factors, I've continued exploring emotional & spiritual components of my experience, particularly those that may connect with breastfeeding difficulties.

A few nuggets I'll share here:

Though they can be a symbol of femininity & play a role in sensuality, the main biological function of the breast is to produce milk. That's the focus here.

In part influenced by the work of Jacques Martel, I’ve included a few emotional connections in slide 1 that I’d consider with breastfeeding difficulties when the physical cause is unknown/ uncertain. I like to approach things holistically.

Slide 2 lists examples of what I’d consider to be aspects of an intimate energetic exchange happening between mother & baby. While benefits of physical nourishment & bond/attachment are usually the focus of breastfeeding discussions, there's more exchange happening during breastfeeding than meets the eye. I'd venture to say it’s one of the most intricate energy exchanges. This happens through different forms of communication, some of which are more on the metaphysical side.

Through breastfeeding, baby receives energy for physical, mental, and psychological growth. Through this they learn about the world. While breastfeeding, communication happens through closeness/skin-to-skin touch, eye contact, speech, and even silent immunological communication. This is where the composition of the milk changes if baby is ill. Researchers believe this may happen when a baby's saliva signals to the mother's body to make more milk with specific antibodies. Breastmilk changes throughout the day and night (for example evening milk has more serotonin and other elements to help baby sleep), & it changes during growth spurts. It's this incredible exchange of information happening even on a micro-level. Communication is at the core of our relationships. When we communicate, we exchange energy.

FL summer is approaching quickly which means it’ FL summer is approaching quickly which means it’s time to find a solid shade covering to take the new babe to the beach.

I asked my Instagram friends for recommendations and several of you beautiful souls recommended this one. On the real, this particular covering looks really cool (though I may have botched the pronunciation). Maybe one day 🤞🏽, but it’s not in the budget this season. Until then, we’ll make it work.

The search continues but couldn’t help but share our masterpiece with you 😂🌞.

Clogged ducts are a real pain in the boob. Finall Clogged ducts are a real pain in the boob.

Finally getting around to sharing some tips that I’ve used (with success) for precisely when I get a clog.

Before, during, and after the whole breast infection from hell I experienced, I was having reoccurring clogged ducts. Whether it’s once or more, they’re just not fun to deal with. They can be a real pain (literally & figuratively).

In addition to nursing (or pumping) often, there are things I did and like having on hand that I’ve found to be very helpful. I wanted to collect tips all together for quick & easy reference. I’m sure I’ve forgotten a few things, but wanted to get some priority items out there 🙏🏽.

I go into a little more detail & provide links for items included here on a blog post. You can check the post out on the website (linked in bio) or at the following:

As always, this is not medical advice.💛

Warmly,
Your (Mama) Friend
