This morning I was up before the sunrise with the Little. I spent time making a healthy breakfast, only for him to dump the pasture-raised eggs and organic strawberries all over the floor after a single bite. 🙃.

Sometimes when I feel overwhelmed, I’ll throw on a nostalgic playlist. Today was one of those days. ✌🏽

Just a little real talk from a work-from-home mama.

To be honest, I’ve mulled over whether or not to share this for a few days now. The reasons why are the same reasons shared with me from others in a similar position. From Moms who run their own business or, more specifically, who work from home. These are the same mothers who feel grateful to do so, but who also find themselves navigating the challenges that come with doing so as well.

There’s this group of parents (which I’m speaking to mothers in particular here) who feel like they can’t acknowledge how they feel because they’re supposed to be grateful for their position. Grateful to be at home more. Grateful to be with their families more.

The reality is that each one of us is navigating a certain kind of “hard”. My ‘hard’ may look different than your ‘hard’. It doesn’t make either of our hard less-than or inconsequential. It doesn’t mean we shouldn’t be able to express our feelings, nor should we jump to invalidate others’ feelings. Yet this is what I’ve experience myself, and what I’ve also heard from others.

To a degree, I’ve found myself afraid to express any sort of hardship as a work-from-home Mother/entrepreneur because I risk coming across as ungrateful, as priveldged, as as petty, as [fill in the blank]. We also don’t know the circumstances of every family and individual- we don’t always know if working from home (or at all) is by need or by choice. Let alone if there is local support or childcare. That’s a whole other topic in and of itself.

Am I grateful? Yes.
Does it also test me to my limits some days? Yes.
Deep down, would I want to change it? No. But I’d be lying if I said I didn’t question this sometimes.

It’s possible to be grateful and to also express and experience challenges.

Sharing this is simply to express my feelings, and hopefully to give other mamas who relate a chance to do the same. Heck, the world’s going to judge us regardless. ✌🏽💛

What is it about giving and receiving greeting cards makes us feel so good? ✉️

Enlisting the help of my old pal, Google, I ended up reading a bunch of articles discussing the psychology behind greeting cards. And it made me love them even more! I’m a sucker for a good card.

From the element of surprise that triggers the release of dopamine (neurotransmitter associated with pleasure & reward) to fostering emotional connections & attachment between sender and receiver, it just makes sense 💛.

The act of writing and even opening and holding one engages multiple senses- from feeling the texture of the cardstock to smudging the ink, this can both create and evoke memories and emotions.

Then you’ve got the positive reinforcement, and the encouraging reminder that someone is willing to take the time to intentionally pick something just for you.

In a world of fast-paced living and convenient technology, it can feel hard to make the time to send or gift some good ole fashioned snail mail (I’m just as guilty of this as anyone). But man, there’s just something about it that hits just right (like the points shared above) 😊.

Real talk: I love leaving friends notes to find and read after I visit. But I also want to be a fly on the wall and watch them read it, too 🤣. I’d love to see them smile and enjoy every word, but I also wonder if it’s some sort of way of seeking validation through their emotional response 🤷🏽‍♀️🤪.

Haven’t decided whether or not this could be considered a toxic trait or not, but I can’t be the only one that feels this way…?

After the roller coaster that was the early stages

After the roller coaster that was the early stages of this breastfeeding journey, I wanted to have any and all tools I could have on hand (or help me play the offense) in the event another clogged duct or mastitis hit.

After being introduced to the work of IBCLC Lactation Consultant, @mayabolman , I started incorporating more *gentle* movement in my routine for my girls.
Her “breast gymnastics” became one of the easiest, free tools to use as part of my self-care rhythm🤸.

Even at months postpartum, I still gently support lymphatic flow through breast massage/gymnastics. I’ll just randomly do it- if I pump…sometimes after nursing…in the shower…while cooking…standing outside putting a real odd show on for the neighbors….etc. 🤣 It honestly feels great, plus it’s fun to say if someone happens to ask what in the world I’m doing🤣.

A few months ago, I had a clogged duct, which I hadn’t had in a while. I started incorporating gentle massage and “gymnastics” in when it felt right, and realized I actually hadn’t done my “gymnastics” for a bit! Thanks to REST, *gentle* breast massage & movement and cold compresses to reduce inflammation, nourishment, and a few go-to supportive supplements, in less than 48 hours I was free and clear! 💛.

Driving home from nearly a week away has me all in

Driving home from nearly a week away has me all in my feels. Not everything went as expected (as is the case with most of our family adventures), but reflecting back on it all, things went exactly as they needed to.

This week has been full of reminders of the beauty and the power of simply getting back to the basics:

😌Rest
☀️Time outside/sunshine
💕Quality time with others
🥾Movement
📲Unplugging from the phone, social media, work, etc.
🍽️Nourishing food (although I’ll be the first to admit, my meals this week could have included less baked goods and more balance 🤣)

With the exception of spending money on groceries/food (and fueling up the car and a round of arcade games if we’re getting granular), this week was full of free medicine for my soul.
